While visiting Cape Town last week for the Two Oceans marathon, the Smart Team had the pleasure of enjoying celebratory drinks after our run at Cape Town’s latest swanky spot The Silo Hotel.
Towering above the V&A Waterfront, The Silo Hotel was built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex. Surrounded by the natural wonder of the Mother City, this dashing space occupies six floors above what will become the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA).
The grain silo was the tallest building in Sub-Saharan Africa at 57m when it was opened in August 1924 after 3 years of construction. The building has two parts – the elevator tower, where The Silo Hotel is located, which facilitated the mechanical bulk handling of grain, and the actual storage silos themselves.
From the outside, the greatest visible change to the building’s original structure by London based design firm Heatherwick Studio, is the addition of pillowed glass windows inserted into the geometry of the hotel floors. These windows bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, this transforms the building into a glowing beacon in the Table Bay harbour.
Drinks
Situated on the sixth floor of the hotel, The Willaston Bar is named after the first ship to export grain from the original silo complex back in 1924.
With stunning views of Cape Town through the 5,5m high pillowed glass windows, there is no better place to enjoy a glass of wine from the carefully crafted and ever evolving list of local and international wines.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic glass of champagne, a friendly beer or an after work cocktail, The Willaston Bar’s superb service and delicious bar snacks are not to be missed.
*No reservations are required in The Willaston Bar.
