Introducing Twinning – The Street Style Trend For Two
Every season it’s something new. Some hot-ticket item no style blogger or editor worth her Gucci Princetown slippers will be seen at fashion week without. A few years ago it was a Kenzo sweatshirt; shortly after, a Chanel Lego purse. Then came the fluffy Fendi bag charms.
Don’t let the ‘it’ item’s ubiquity in street style galleries fool you – such pieces typically carry a hefty price tag only the Chiara Ferragnis and Anna Dello Russos of the world can afford.
Until now.
This year, the ultimate street style bait is something money can’t buy – your BFF.
It’s a trend that can be traced back to a photograph of Caroline Vreeland and Shea Marie at New York Fashion Week. Long limbs and blonde locks, the great-granddaughter of Diana Vreeland and her fashion designer friend stand arm in arm outside the Cushnie et Ochs show, a ‘Best Friend’ motif graffitied across the back of their matching Veda leather jackets.
It was a defining moment for the pair, who continued to coordinate their looks for the remainder of fashion month, blazing a trail that other fashion-forward twinning BFFs would quickly follow (Kendall and Gigi we’re looking at you).
Twinning is winning
Gone are the days when a “what are you wearing?” WhatsApp was motivated by the fear of turning up to an event dressed the same as someone else. Now the matchy-matchy moments are orchestrated.
The urban dictionary has pinned down the term Twinning as simply, “A take on the popular term ‘winning,’ it refers to identical thoughts or behavior, as well as to brilliance.”
In reality, ‘style twinning’ is one of the most potent moves two fashionistas can partake in. It gets those street style cameras clicking and ups the ante on every outfit.
Whether it was pals Aimee Song and Camila Coelho wearing the exact same Tibi dress or European bloggers Caroline Daur and Helena Bordon showing up to an event in coordinated black and yellow outfits, similar looks were spotted all over the streets of 2018 New York Fashion Week.
Yep, This Might Be the Most Iconic Outfit Ever
Vintage Adidas sportswear is having a serious moment right now.
Bigger than ever, we’ve seen it everywhere: the three stripes of Adidas have taken over. Whether it be leggings, jackets or full tracksuits, more and more people have gone full Stormzy and can been seen wearing the classic sportswear brand.
So what’s cooler than cool?
Smartgirls twinning in vintage Adidas of course 😉
Tracksuits & 80’s Trends
Perhaps the most iconic retro sportswear staple of all, Adidas first introduced the tracksuit as athletic wear in 1964, but it was during the 80’s that the Adidas “Shell-Suit” really rose to stardom.
With hip-hop at it’s prime, and all eyes on the stars, everyone wanted to be wearing what they were. Arguably the most legendary appearance has to be Run-DMC. They appeared many times wearing head to toe Adidas three-stripe tracksuits, paired with shell-toe Adidas trainers. This started a phenomenon, with stylish youngsters worldwide copying this look that’s still ever-relevant today.
These days the Adidas tracksuit is hotter than ever with many a style icon rocking the look lately, Gigi & Bella Hadid, Rita Ora and Rihanna to name a few.
